The Versatile Woolly Worm Fly Fishing Fly By Brian Smith
I have been fly fishing for over forty Years now and am continually amazed how versatile some fly patterns are. There are several fly patterns that come to mind when I think of versatile flies but few if any are as versatile as the Woolly Worm. The largest Brown Trout I ever caught was on the Jefferson River in Montana several years ago. The fishing was slow that day and my guide asked to see what flies I had with me. He suggested I try dark colored bead head Woolly Worm that I had in my fly box. I was working the Woolly Worm along the banks not really expecting to catch anything. On about my tenth cast I got a strike. After about a half mile of chasing the big trout down the river my guide finally managed to guide the boat into some slow water where we landed a nice fat 22 inch Brown Trout. Since that day I have always taken Woolly Worms with me when I go trout fishing. I have caught nice sized Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout and some monster Lake Trout. I will fish both the bead head Woolly Worm and the un- weighted Woolly Worm depending on the depth of the water and the flow. The Woolly
Worm is also one of my favorite flies for fishing Blue Gill, and Bream. I enjoy taking my 2 wt. fly rod to a lake of pond when any species of sunfish are bedding. The smaller sized, brightly colored Woolly Worms seem to work best. I also use Woolly worms to catch Smallmouth Bass and Crappie Bass. For Crappie Bass, yellow seems to work well for me, and just about any color will work for Smallmouth Bass. I have also had a lot of fun and caught several species of saltwater on Woolly Worms. Try fishing Woolly Worms in the saltwater sounds and bays in the summer when the Spots, Croaker and Sea Trout are present. Use a light weight fly rod and put a small piece of frozen shrimp or frozen squid on the hook of your woolly worm. I have also caught Bonefish, Redfish, small Snook and even Permit on Woolly Worms. When I go fly fishing whether it be in freshwater of saltwater, Woolly Worms are like my credit card, "I don't leave home without them". I hope you find this information useful and will try a few of the things I have talked about. Catch fish and have fun. Thanks,
Brian Brian has been fly fishing most of his life and also has a website didicated to fly fishing. fly fishing - saltwater fly fishing - woolly worm - If it swims, Brian will catch it on a fly rod.
