3 Worm Fishing Secrets
By Trevor Kugler

I need to preface this article by stating that when I use the term 'worm fishing' I'm not referring to those multi colored pieces of rubber that many bass fishermen are so enamored with. For the purposes of this article the term 'worm fishing' means fishing with live worms. These three secrets were taught to me more than 20 years ago by the best worm angler that I've ever known.

To me, and my mentor who taught me these 3 secrets, is as much an art form as fly fishing has ever been proclaimed to be. It simply doesn't get the press that fly fishing gets. An integral part of his "system" was the use of ultra light gear and line no heavier than six pound test. The use of light gear and line results in more bites as well as making you a better angler. Light gear and line forces you to learn how to play your catch, rather than simply hooking a fish and reeling it in.

As I said, I was introduced to these 3 secrets more than 20 years ago, and as far as I know my fishing mentor, the man who taught them to me developed all of them. Is this the reality? Probably not, but he is the only person that I ever saw using these secrets. The bottom line is that they work, and will help any angler become a much better worm angler, and catch more fish. Below are the 3 secrets that my fishing mentor taught me:

  1. Pay Attention To Your Hands - Anglers don't pay enough attention to the scents that might be on their hands, such as gasoline or nicotine, especially when using live worms as bait. Some fish including trout, smallmouth bass, and walleye have sensitive senses of smell and if these scents transfer to your bait when baiting

up, they are much less apt to bite. This is why you want to make sure that your hands are free of unnatural scents when worm fishing. A great practice is to get in the habit of rubbing your hands in a handful of grass or dirt before baiting up. This will eliminate any unnatural odors that may be on your hands.

  2. Pay Attention To The Weather & Moon - Okay this secret goes for all fishing, not just worm fishing, but nonetheless it's a great secret. Spending your fishing time fishing when the fish are the most active, just makes sense, and it's especially true for worm fishing. The biggest two factors to the feeding behavior of fish are the weather & moon. That's why understanding how the weather & moon effect fish is so important to your success or failure.
  3. Always Employ Gang Hooks - If you fish with live worms as bait, gang hooks should be employed. They are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling live worms to be presented in a completely natural and effective manner. My mentor insisted on using gang hooks for all of his live worm fishing, and I've been doing the same thing ever since. As a matter of fact, I can't even imagine fishing with live worms without my pre tied gang hooks.

The bottom line is that these 3 secrets will make anyone a much more successful live worm angler. I've personally been using every one of them will great success for more than 20 years. I know they will help anyone catch more fish while using live worms as bait.
