4 Worm Fishing Secrets
By Trevor Kugler

In this article I'm going to reveal four little known, yet extremely effective secrets. These four secrets were revealed to me more than 15 years ago by the best worm angler I have ever known. The fisherman that I'm referring to caught more trophy trout, while using worms as bait, than any person I have since known. In my opinion, he was every bit the artist that any 'flea flicker' has ever been professed to be. The term 'flea flicker' is what he called fly fishermen. The bottom line is that these simple secrets can help you catch more fish.

  1. Always Use Lively Worms - Live worms need to be lively in order to be effective. This means keeping them in a refrigerator or cooler when not in use and dipping them in the water on hot days. This is why a bait bag is such an important tool. On hot days, you can simply un-clip your bait bag full of worms and dip it in the cool water that you're fishing. This helps to keep your worms lively.
  2. Bottom Is Your Friend - When fishing with worms, especially in the flowing water of a river or stream, bottom is your friend. The goal is to get your offering to bounce along the bottom as it flows naturally with the current. This means that snags will occur, but as the gentleman I referred to earlier used to always remind me, "If you're not getting snagged, you're not fishing in the right place." This is something to keep in mind as you begin to employ these secrets.
  3. Be Efficient

    - You don't want to waste valuable fishing time with mundane things like searching for your bait. This is why employing a Bait Bag is so important. Always having your live worms at your fingertips whenever you need to bait up is a huge time saver, and makes you a much more efficient angler.

  4. Natural Presentation - Present your live worms in a natural manner is probably the most important of these 4 secrets. This is why the 'artist' that I'm referring to always used gang hooks for presenting live worms. A set of pre-tied gang hooks is the best way to present worms outstretched and naturally, the way God intended. And when a live worm is presented in a natural manner, it's amazing how much more effective it is. Worms rigged on gang hooks will increase hook ups by at least 25%.

These 4 simple tips will dramatically increase your success rate as a worm angler. How do I know this? Because I've been using all of them for more than 15 years, and can attest that they work. I feel privileged to have known such a great angler and am honored to pass some of his secrets on to you. Remember what Steven Wright said of us anglers, "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot." These tips will help you with the 'looking like an idiot' part of that quote.
