Live Worm Fishing - 2 Items Every Live Worm Angler Needs To Have By Trevor Kugler
I've been fishing with live worms for more than 25 years and in that time there are 2 pieces of fishing equipment that are invaluable to me. In this article I'm going to outline the 2 items that are as important to my live as the worms themselves. I think you will find that these two pieces if fishing equipment will be just as valuable to you. Before I describe the items themselves, let me discuss one of the most important and simple rules of live which many anglers may not be aware of. That rule is simply making sure that your hands are free of any unnatural scents. You see, any scents that are on your hands will transfer to your worm, and if fish (especially larger more experienced fish) detect these scents they are much less apt to bite your worm. This is especially true with fish with very sensitive senses of smell such as trout and bass. Now for the 2 items every live worm angler needs to have.
- Gang Hooks - These hooks aren't any different than any other fishing hook that you've ever seen, except for the fact that there are two of them. That's right, gang hooks consist of two hooks ties in tandem, sometimes referred to as a "set" of gang hooks. When it comes to live these hooks are invaluable. They enable a live worm to be presented in an outstretched
and natural manner (which makes a huge difference in bite rates). Fish like it when a worm looks like a worm and not a balled up piece of meat. Gang hooks are the first item that every live worm angler needs to have.
- Live Worm Carrier - When I fish with live worms, 90% of the time I'm standing in or alongside of a river or stream. I used to hate having to find my worms, open them, pick one out, replace the lid, and then return my bait to wherever it came from. This was a complete pain in the butt, as well as an incredible waste of valuable fishing time. That's when I discovered an effective live worm carrier called a bait bag. It's simply a small pouch that holds your live worms while fishing. This way your bait is always "at your fingertips" rather than in your fishing vest or tackle carrier. When a worm is needed, you simply grab it with your fingertips and rig it up. You'll find as a live worm angler that an effective live worm carrier is literally a godsend.
When it comes to live you will find that both of these items are all but invaluable. If you don't or haven't used either one of these items I suggest you add them to your fishing inventory sooner, rather than later. You'll be glad you did.
