Fly Fishing School
Quite often the best way to learn something new is to go to a school that offers hands on instruction and that certainly holds true for fly fishing. If you don’t have a mentor to give you hands on instruction then attending fly school is the next best thing. There are many fly schools to choose from nationwide offering expert training and instruction.

Most fishermen have heard of the Orvis company, one of America’s oldest tackle businesses. Not only do they manufacture gear but they offer a world class fly school available in 10 states. Under the tutorage of a qualified and skilled instructor you will learn proper casting techniques, proper fly selection as well as how to choose your fly gear and tackle.

The 10 states where you will find The Fly School are Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, and Idaho. The students learn fly on location at popular fly spots including on the ocean if you are attending the Cape Cod school. The school is great for beginners to learn the basics right the first time and it is popular as a refresher course with the more experienced angler.

Orvis offers fly instruction via books and DVDs for those who

aren’t able to fit the school into their schedule or find the school fees too much for their budget. The Fly School package starts at $430 for a two day session and includes the use of Orvis rods and reels, line and leader. Not only do you get expert hands on instruction but you get to learn while using the same quality gear that so many fly fishermen swear by. Learn what works for you without having to buy it first.

It is possible to learn fly on your own by trial and error and by getting advice and instruction from friends and other fishermen, but learning from a professional instructor will start you off on the right foot. You won’t have to unlearn a bad habit later on because you will have learned it right the first time. Having said that, don’t let the lack of an instructor stop you from leaning the sport. It will probably just take you awhile longer to learn the techniques. Remember, even awkward fly casting is thousands of times more fun than sitting on the bank of a river wishing you could wade into the stream and fly fish.

So make it a point to get started as soon as possible. After learning the basics the thing to do is practice and practice some more. Enjoying the great outdoors while practicing a new skill is what dreams are made of.
